Presenter's Biographies
Sami Aita, MD - Chairman and CEO, MedcomSoft
Dr. Sami Aita, founder and CEO of MedcomSoft Inc., began to demonstrate his entrepreneurial spirit shortly after graduating from the Montpellier School of Medicine in France in 1975. Practicing emergency medicine in Paris, Dr. Aita soon realized a business opportunity to provide emergency house call services to the elderly, indigent, homeless and those unsatisfied with the service levels of an overburdened healthcare system. Within a few years SOS92, his first company, grew to become one of the largest of its kind in France, a distinction it still enjoys to this day.
In 1980, Dr. Aita sold his interest in SOS92 and relocated to Toronto, where he immediately set up Advanced Health Services to provide similar services. Seeing the need for more efficient communications within the healthcare industry, he founded AMCS in 1986 and began developing leading edge software solutions; the most noteworthy being the Health Transaction Network (HTN), which permitted Ontario physicians, for the first time in the spring of 1990, to use PDAs and to submit claims electronically to the Ministry of Health. In 1994, Dr. Aita formed MedcomSoft for the purpose of developing software solutions to assist physicians in recording clinical data more easily and more accurately. By 1997, MedcomSoft MedWorks was introduced. Today, the MedcomSoft program is regarded as one of, if not the most advanced electronic medical record systems in the world.
Under Dr. Aita’s guidance, MedcomSoft became the first medical software provider in the world to enable the electronic, real-time collection, analysis and distribution of structured, codified, clinical information. Using the Medcin point of care terminology, MedcomSoft is able to achieve Level 4 Interoperability: the implication of which is enormous for all sectors of the healthcare community. Today, MedcomSoft is a leading international healthcare efficiency company operating both in Canada and the United States.
Dr. Aita is considered an industry expert who currently sits on several national committees working towards improving and standardizing healthcare information systems and EMRs.
