Kryptiq CEO Participates in Visionary Healthcare IT Legislation
Bill seeks growth in Medical Informatics Programs and Public/Private Sector Collaboration to Speed Delivery of a Connected Healthcare System
PORTLAND, Ore. – May 31, 2006 – Kryptiq CEO Luis Machuca represented Oregon’s vibrant private-sector healthcare IT economy on a panel announcing new legislation proposed by Oregon Congressman David Wu. The legislation, a product of an Environment, Technology and Standards Subcommittee field testimony held in Portland, OR in February, provides funding to centers for higher education to foster public/private sector collaboration and enable a healthcare workforce that can take advantage of innovative technologies, such as healthcare connectivity solutions.
Congressman Wu introduced his legislation by highlighting the challenges that face healthcare IT adoption today, noting that information is isolated in silos, and standards-setting is an enormous challenge. He compared top-down approaches to the introduction of Esperanto, producing a language for interoperability that no one would use. In contrast, he highlighted the success of community-based, organically adopted approaches that foster local innovation. His bill authorizes grant funding for education, research and development of collaborative healthcare IT solutions.
Machuca applauded Congressman Wu’s vision in tackling healthcare issues on behalf of Oregon and the nation. He emphasized that the lack of clinical data mobility is at the heart of the cost and quality issues in healthcare today. As part of this discussion, Machuca highlighted how locally developed healthcare connectivity solutions, such as Connect IQ, represent the single biggest opportunity to quickly and cost-effectively modernize our healthcare system.
"Oregon is the healthcare IT capital of the world and the leader in healthcare connectivity. Last month we had over 250 healthcare leaders gathered here in Portland sharing examples from across the nation of how they are enabling connectivity in their healthcare communities today, through an organically adopted solution we call Connect IQ. This bill supports the Connect IQ approach, encouraging grass-roots adoption of readily available technologies to address connectivity challenges," commented Luis Machuca, president and CEO of Kryptiq.
"Congressman Wu has taken significant and speedy action to develop visionary legislation that will fuel the intellectual horsepower needed to foster the adoption and further innovation of solutions like Connect IQ, making the benefits accessible to patients and providers everywhere."
