Streamlining Pharmacy Communication
eScriptMessenger electronic prescribing software connects users of GE’s Centricity EMR solution directly to retail pharmacy computers through the secure Pharmacy Health Information Exchange operated by SureScripts, allowing for safe and quick communications between your office and connected pharmacies in your area. Over 90% of US retail pharmacies use software enabled to connect to this network. This allows Centricity users to prescribe medications and manage prescription refill requests electronically.

eScriptMessenger FAQs:
What is eScriptMessenger™?
With eScriptMessenger (eSM) you can securely send prescriptions, and approve or deny prescription refil requests from within Centricity EMR. This allows your clinic to dramatically reduce incoming calls and faxes, streamline prescription related tasks, and save time and resources.
What is SureScripts?
SureScripts was founded in 2001 by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of the overall prescribing process. The Pharmacy Health Information Exchange operated by SureScripts is the largest network to link electronic communications between pharmacies and physicians, allowing the electronic exchange of prescription information. Pharmacy Health Information Exchange operated by SureScripts provides electronic connectivity to over 90% of pharmacies nationwide.
How does eSM work?
eSM works with the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network to send new prescriptions, and approve or deny incoming renewal requests from a pharmacy. eSM uses existing Centricity methods for generating prescriptions, and all prescribing and refill activities are automatically documented within Centricity.
-
New prescription workflow
Sending a new prescription with eSM fits seamlessly into the current Centricity prescription writing workflow. A new prescribing method allows you to send prescriptions directly to the computers at pharmacies that are activated on the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network . This is a significant improvement in safety and accuracy over the current method – where prescriptions are delivered via fax.
-
Prescription renewal workflow
An incoming pharmacy renewal request is received as a document on the Centricity desktop. Using the eSM renewal refill encounter form, you can approve or deny the request then send it back to the pharmacy.
-
eSM Clinic functionality
eSM Clinic is an administrative application installed in your Centricity environment. It allows you to manage the electronic prescribing process, including:

What is eSM Central?
eSM Central resides in the Kryptiq Data Center, and is used to monitor and process prescription transactions. eSM Central is an internal Kryptiq application, and is not used by individual clinics.
How can I prepare for electronic prescribing at my clinic?
You will need to perform two important tasks before installing eSM:
- Update information for your Centricity prescribers. Make sure that all of the information for your prescribers (including phone and fax numbers, and DEA numbers) is complete and up-to-date within your Centricity database. Prescribers with missing information cannot be authorized on the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network, and are unable to prescribe electronically.
Note. A prescriber’s DEA numbers must be included within Centricity during the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network authorization process, but can be removed from Centricity after authorization.
- “Clean up” your Centricity pharmacy list. Make sure your pharmacy list is free of duplicate entries, and that each entry is complete and up-to-date. Duplicate or missing information complicates the process for matching your pharmacies to those on the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network . Your pharmacies must be matched before they can be activated for e-prescribing.
To help “clean up” your pharmacy list, you can download a pharmacy report application found in the eSM resource downloads area above. Running the application produces a report that shows all pharmacies within your Centricity pharmacy list, and the number of prescriptions sent to each over the last 90 days. You can use this report to help resolve duplicate entries and identify missing information within your Centricity pharmacy list. Also, Pharmacy Health Information Exchange Network will use this report to help them reach out to the most important pharmacies in your area.
Note. Maintaining a “clean” pharmacy list is an ongoing task you will perform between now and implementation, and beyond. Even after you produce the pharmacy report and resolve duplicates and missing information, you will need to make sure that incoming data (from your practice management system or other sources) does not compromise the information you have resolved.
How does SureScripts work with pharmacies and clinics?
Before your clinic begins e-prescribing, SureScripts conducts a pharmacy outreach program in your area. The outreach notifies connected independent and chain pharmacies that your clinic will begin e-prescribing. Additional resources are available through the SureScripts Electronic Prescribing Resource Center™ for your practice to conduct your own announcements about your connectivity to pharmacies in your area. Just call 1-866-RxReady (866-797-3239).
